Cherries: An ambassadorial role earmarked for Fletch
CHAIRMAN Eddie Mitchell has opened the door for Steve Fletcher to continue his Dean Court love affair long after he hangs up his boots. The club captain has again been a major player for Eddie Howe's team this season and has stated on numerous occasions that he has no intention of retiring. But when the club's record appearance-maker does call it a day, he looks likely to remain a permanent fixture at Dean Court if Mitchell gets his way. Fletcher's loyalty to Cherries was recognised when the North Stand was renamed in his honour on Saturday. Mitchell believes that was a well-deserved gesture and he envisages a key ambassadorial position for the Cherries legend in future years. When asked if he would be keen to find a role for Fletcher once he calls time on his distinguished career, Mitchell was adamant he wanted to retain his services. He told the Echo: I've told him not to take up offers of anything else when he and Eddie decide he can't kick a ball any more. He is to see us and he'll get involved. I've already got an office decorated for him in my mind. We want him in a front role that's for sure and we're not going to let him go. Mitchell added: He is a big asset for the club and he has got a lot to do off the field. I sat down with Fletch three months ago and said that when the day does come (that he retires) don't think you've got to find a job'. We've got one planned. He's worth his weight in gold off the pitch and on it. To let him go and get lost in the archives would be stupid. He's got the right character to be around the club. He's good at talking to people, he presents himself well and what more could you want. His name is good around the town and he hasn't got a blemish really. That's a great thing for the club. His service was rewarded at the weekend when the veteran targetman unveiled the newly named Steve Fletcher Stand prior to the League Two clash against Bradford City at Dean Court.
