Despite enjoying the lion's share of possession, the Cherries failed to score and were then punished by Nicky Southall's second-half strike.
"I thought we were the better side in the first half, we dominated them, but I don't think we created a lot and that would be the disappointing thing," said Howe.
"I was pleased at half-time but also frustrated because when you're on top you've got to take your chances and that's something we need to work on.
"You're just looking for something to drop, a bit of magic from someone to try and open them up but it didn't happen.
"Overall, we didn't create a lot but we had a couple of half-chances and, after the break, it was very stop-start so you couldn't get any flow to the game."
