HATCHET MAN: Bobby breathes a sigh but Fulham deserve better from Zamora

Bobby Zamora, according to his manager Roy Hodgson, felt a great deal of relief after finally scoring another Premier League goal on Sunday. But after trying to redefine the definition of a striker by failing to hit the net in the last five months, the Fulham player still has a long way to go before he can feel happy about the job he is doing. Hodgson was diplomacy personified, saying it was not the goals that were important to him but the work Zamora does for the team. Relief: But Zamora needs to raise his game and get more goals'It would give me no satisfaction if he had eight goals and were in the bottom three,' he said, as if that was the only alternative.   More from Hatchet Man. HATCHET MAN: I need Arshavin because Arsenal are not good enough to win the Champions League without him - desperate Wenger rages at 'unfair' cup-tied rule24/02/09 HATCHET MAN: Big Sam wants justice for Ronaldo's kick at Dunne - but only if it benefits Blackburn and nobody else whatsoever24/02/09 HATCHET MAN: Bellamy heals the Robinho 'rift' by insisting: You just need to play a lot better, that's all24/02/09 HATCHET MAN: Villa boss O'Neill has eight days to prove he's a great manager or watch his dream fade and die24/02/09 HATCHET MAN: City setback proves just how much Liverpool need Stevie G23/02/09 HATCHET MAN: Smiles better at Sunderland with Ricky instead of Roy23/02/09 HATCHET MAN: Wenger needs to get over himself or get out of Arsenal23/02/09 HATCHET MAN: At least the pressure will be off air-grabber Gomes in the empty stadia that host Spurs reserves20/02/09 VIEW FULL ARCHIVE  In reality, if Zamora had scored regularly this season Fulham could be talking about Europe rather than not taking safety for granted. They have drawn nine Premier League games and if the striker had turned a few of those into wins with the odd goal it would have made a big difference. Despite having just turned 28 years old, Zamora is still a player waiting to fulfil his potential. Brighton are the only club he has scored frequently enough for and in the top flight he has never made the grade. Even at West Ham, where he was given a real chance, his record was 30 League goals in 130 appearances. His most prolific season brought him just 13 goals in all competitions - and that was when the club were in the Championship. Zamora can work as hard as he likes for Fulham but until he scores consistently, he will be an attacker, a midfielder or a workhorse. Whatever you want to call it, it will be second rate.  Fulham 2 West Bromwich 0: After waiting for 1,763 minutes.
