Given urges City stability

Manchester City's newest signing Shay Given believes the club would be making a huge mistake if they were to sack manager Mark Hughes anytime soon. Given had an abundance of managers during his 12-year spell with Newcastle United so the Republic of Ireland international knows more than most the importance of stability.Hughes has been with City less than a year after leaving Blackburn to join the ambitious club, although results have been mixed despite a number of high-profile arrivals.Given swapped Newcastle for Eastlands during the winter transfer window and the 32-year-old believes that if Hughes is given ample time then he will succeed. Not rocket science"It's not rocket science that if you keep changing your manager every year you are not going to get stability at the club," he told The Sun."I do not want to see what happened at Newcastle happening at Manchester City and I hope Mark Hughes is there for a long time. "The longest-serving manager I had at the club was Bobby Robson and they were probably the most successful years I had at the club. "Then it was all change again, another manager, new players new ideas and at the end of it the changing did not do a lot for anyone."Pressure is onGiven knows pressure is on Hughes to deliver silverware due to Sheikh Mansour's heavy investment and he does fear the City boss may not be given the time needed to challenge for honours."Because the club is so financially well backed there is more coverage and more of a spotlight," he continued."But Manchester City needs to have a settled manager and the owners need to keep backing him. It's not going to happen overnight. "The club has financial power but we have to get up the league to attract more top quality players. The manager sold the club to me and told me the ambitions and where he wanted it to go and what the owners wanted and it's exciting and a journey I want to be on."
