7 other players Chelsea might want to sign along with Radamel Falcao

Chelsea are reportedly on the verge of signing Radamel Falcao on loan for next season – a slightly surprising move given he was one of the undoubted flops of last year at Manchester United. Yep, Falcao managed just four goals in his season at Old Trafford, but evidently that was enough to catch Mourinho’s eye. So with that in mind, here are some other players the Special One might want to consider making a move for. 1. Angel di Maria (Nigel French/EMPICS Sport) He’s the Premier League’s most expensive player but by the end of the season wasn’t even an automatic first choice in the Manchester United team. Mourinho could sign him to reunite him with Falcao. That would be a bold move. 2. Erik Lamela (John Walton/PA) If Mourinho saw something he liked in Falcao, perhaps he also saw something in Lamela – apart from that rabona. We all saw that. The Tottenham flop could fight for a place on the Chelsea bench with Juan Cuadrado. 3. Ricky van Wolfwinkel (Nigel French/EMPICS) Van Wolfwinkel looked liked an inspired signing by Chris Hughton when he scored on his Norwich debut, but then went on to bag precisely no more goals as the Canaries were relegated. It’s the sort of form that might just catch Mourinho’s eye. 4. Mario Balotelli (Peter Byrne/PA) Balotelli was, of course, an unmitigated disaster at Liverpool, contributing pretty much nothing to Liverpool’s season. Perhaps Mourinho could get the best out of him though – just like he did with another former Liverpool striker, Fernando Torres. Oh, wait… 5. Afonso Alves (Steve Drew/EMPICS) Alves was SO BAD during his stint at Middlesbrough that he’s become a cautionary tale for any manager pondering buying a player based on a good record in Holland. He’s 34 now, but if anyone could rehabilitate his reputation, it’s surely Mourinho. 6. Dejan Lovren (Mike Egerton/EMPICS) If Mourinho wants to strengthen – or possibly weaken – his defence, then he should look no further than Lovren. A £20million signing for Liverpool, he’d have been Liverpool’s biggest disaster were it not for Balotelli. In some ways he’s the defensive equivalent of Falcao – those ways being that he wasn’t very good last season. 7. Fernando Torres No. He’s not back (John Walton/EMPICS) No. Just no.
