Sven in dark over City axe

Sven-Goran Eriksson has admitted he remains in the dark over the reasons behind his dismissal by Manchester City last summer. The former England boss was given just 12 months at the helm of the Eastlands outfit before ex-owner Thaksin Shinawatra elected to bring in Mark Hughes.City made an impressive start to life under the Swede last season before fading after Christmas, but still finished in a creditable ninth place and secured a Uefa Cup berth via the Fair Play league.Eriksson, who has been linked with the Portsmouth vacancy, is now at the helm of Mexico but is under pressure after a series of mixed results, although he insists he will not walk away.Yet it is his brief tenure at Eastlands which still causes Eriksson confusion several months after his departure.Big adventureHe told World Soccer magazine: "I can't, to this day, understand it."Up to Christmas we were amongst the best three or four teams but, after that, the season was too long for most of the players."We had too many who weren't used to playing in the Premier League. In the end, they collapsed."It was a big adventure to be able to compete against the best teams."The owner had something in his head to have another coach."He had personal problems back in Thailand. He said just after sacking me, 'Sven, I love you'. And I actually still believe it was from the heart."
