Manchester United's Edwin van der Sar on verge of European clean sheet record

Within the Dutchman's sights is the 1,275-minute mark set by Atletico Madrid 'keeper Abel Resino. However, the 38-year-old still has some way to go if he is to beat the world record for league games. It has been confirmed that Van der Sar must go another seven matches without conceding a goal if he is to beat that landmark, held by Brazilian Mazaropi.Mazaropi, who is now coach of Santo Angelo, went an incredible 1,816 minutes unbeaten between May 1977 and September 1978 for Vasco da Gama.Van der Sar is currently unbeaten for 1,212 minutes - ever since Samir Nasri put one past him for Arsenal during United's 2-1 loss at the Emirates on Nov 8 - 604 mins behind Mazaropi. So while the European record should go this evening, Van der Sar will have to extend his unbeaten run into a 20th league match if he is to break the world bench mark.Other records that Van Der Sar has already broken are the Football League record (1,103 mins), the Premier League record (1,025 mins) and the British league record (1,155 mins).Chris Woods still holds the British record for going unbeaten in all competitions - 1,196 while at Rangers in 1986-87.Van der Sar is still some way off that record as Japanese side Gamba Osaka put three past him during the Club World Cup in December.
