Duffen opposes January window

Hull City chairman Paul Duffen believes the January transfer window is an 'artificial market place'. There have been calls for the window to be scrapped after another frantic month of activity in the Premier League.Duffen believes there are problems with the window in its current format and has called for the issue to be reviewed."I think the January transfer window is an artificial market place and because of that I don't think it serves anybody at all," Duffen told Sky Sports News."I think it is a very bad thing."There is a growing support now that the whole issue of the January transfer window has to be looked at again."InflatedDuffen also rejected the suggestion that smaller clubs could take advantage of the winter window by asking for more money for their players. He explained: "A lot of transactions do happen at inflated prices in January but I'm not sure that does legislate in favour of the smaller clubs."Very often the smaller clubs want to hold onto their prized assets to ensure they retain their Premier League lives."Smaller clubs unfortunately tend to be buyers in that market because they are trying to do something to improve their fortunes."Premier League stakeholders are set to discuss their views on the January window at a meeting this week and Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has insisted that at least 14 of the 20 clubs will want change.Duffen said: "I am sure Dave's right. I can't think of one club that wants to sustain the status quo."
