Megson not ready to spend big

Gary Megson admits he was close to adding to his squad before the transfer deadline, but is unsure if Bolton Wanderers are ready for expensive signings. After Megson spent big on Johan Elmander last summer, he was considering breaking the club's transfer record with a deal for Miguel Veloso in January. The Bolton boss opted against pushing on with a bid for the Sporting Lisbon midfielder after expressing concerns about the amount of money involved.Megson outlined his cautious approach to bringing in fresh faces, but revealed he was near to increasing his options in the final days of the transfer window.Close not good enough"We were close, but close is not good enough," said Megson on Sky Sports News. "We clearly needed to get them in and we couldn't do that."What I wasn't prepared to do was say, we want player X - it would be unfair to say what their name was - and if we can't get him, we'll get Y, and if not, then we'll get Z."It would get to a point where is that actually improving us or can we do it without affecting ourselves in some other way."If we'd have bought a certain player that would have cost us absolutely millions, I don't think we're ready for that, it would have been like putting a tiara on a big shire horse."We're not at that point yet, so we've got to get a squad and a team that is capable of getting results in the Premiership and moving on from there."
