All the best reaction to Gus Poyet's sacking as Sunderland manager

It’s hard to imagine many managers surviving a 4-0 loss to Aston Villa, and Sunderland boss Gus Poyet duly paid for that result with his job today. The Uruguayan was given the old “thanks for his endeavours” by chairman Ellis Short, bringing to an end an eventful 17 months in charge which included last season’s great escape, a trip to Wembley in the Capital One Cup final and that 8-0 loss against Southampton. Some Sunderland fans were disappointed to see him go. Gutted it hasn't worked out for Gus Poyet. Thanks for the memories including The Great Escape, Wembley and the Derby Wins! #SAFC — Josh Rutherford (@JRuddy_1) March 16, 2015 Normally when you sack a manager you think thank god for that, he's gone. But I'm just sad it didn't work out for Gus. #SAFC @ALS_Fanzine — Claire Riedlinger (@CRiedlinger77) March 16, 2015 Gutted it hasn't worked for Gus, as I was for MON. Thats the first change made, what we need is an overhaul #SAFC — Ellie Stevens (@EllieStevens_) March 16, 2015 Many thought that, despite a well of affection for Poyet, it was the right move. I wanted Poyet sacked but will never forget what he done for us last season. #safc — Paul SAFC Sands (@paulsands4) March 16, 2015 Goodbye Gus. Fun at first. No fun at all by the end. He wasn't the only problem at #safc but he had become a big part of the problem. — Simon O'Rourke (@sorourkeITV) March 16, 2015 But there was a definite desire for the club to address wider issues. Bigger picture is #safc have stagnated/got worse under Ellis Short. Club talk of Europe/philosophy. Being overtaken by clubs who spend less — Mark Douglas (@MsiDouglas) March 16, 2015 Now for the director of football, boardroom elements & some players to depart too! #safc — malcolm robinson (@mally1robbo) March 16, 2015 There was some suggestion that Poyet himself might not be too disappointed about it. Gus Poyet gets the news that he doesn't have to manage Sunderland any more… pic.twitter.com/urVQs9OrVR — Danny Kelly (@dannykellywords) March 16, 2015 Sunderland have sacked Gus Poyet. Not sure who'll be more relieved him or the fans? — Manish Bhasin (@_manishbhasin) March 16, 2015 And who can blame him with ferocious fan protests like this one? Well that didn't take much #Poyet #SAFC pic.twitter.com/e5BbbdPGPS — Big D (@vocnorth) March 16, 2015 And of course, there was rampant speculation about who might succeed him. Sunderland sack Poyet. Sam on his way to the north east? — West Ham Transfers (@westhamtransfer) March 16, 2015 Uni mates reckon Paul Bracewell will replace Poyet #NeverHeardOfHim — PaulasTweets (@T_SKIII) March 16, 2015 The second Jozy left, Poyet was always a dead man walking #BobBradley4Sunderland — Men in Blazers (@MenInBlazers) March 16, 2015 Gus Poyet sacked. Ian Holloway shaking phone to make sure it's still working. — Kevin Hunter Day (@kevinhunterday) March 16, 2015 Wonder if @harmy611 fancies the job???? #safc #ashington — Chris Rushworth (@rushworth22) March 16, 2015 And then there was chat about the most famous dodgy knees in football… Poyet gets sacked and at the same time Harry Redknapp's knees become instantly better — Simon Dawkins (@simondawkins23) March 16, 2015 Oh Harry Redknapp, you are the love of my life Oh Harry Redknapp, I'd let you shag my wife Oh Harry Redknapp, I want HURTY knees too #SAFC — Wise Men Say Podcast (@WiseMenSayPod) March 16, 2015 As for Poyet, he can reflect he’s gone the same way as many before him. The "Head Coach gets sacked" template set up by Sunderland's website is now paying for itself. #SAFC #Poyet pic.twitter.com/cWdIOKii4K — Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) March 16, 2015 At least his exit had a modicum of dignity about it this time… Slightly disappointed that Poyet wasn't sacked live on TV like last time… https://t.co/FJ7ayFcXOW @markchapman — Nooruddean (@BeardedGenius) March 16, 2015
