9 things we learned as we stayed awake through Liverpool's draw with Blackburn

There was one English football match on TV today – so Liverpool and Blackburn had substantial pressure on their shoulders to entertain the nation. They failed. It was pretty turgid stuff at Anfield as the third of the weekend’s FA Cup quarter-finals ended in a goalless draw, with the biggest talking point being a nasty-looking injury to Martin Skrtel. Here’s what we learned… 1. Martin Skrtel is nails (Peter Byrne/PA) Martin Skrtel's head could have come off then and he'd still be giving the thumbs up … pic.twitter.com/94HL8f5JRQ — TheSPORTbible (@TSBible) March 8, 2015 We knew that anyway, but we loved that he thought to give a thumbs-up as he was carted off a stretcher to let everyone know he was okay. What a guy. It seems Skrtel didn’t suffer anything too serious after he was injured in an aerial clash with Rudy Gestede. Concussion for Skrtel, nothing broken, bit of good news! — Kopite Times (@KopiteTimes) March 8, 2015 2. People really don’t like Glen Johnson "Glen Johnson an attacking defender." Shame he's not a defending one eh? — Coutinhoooo ❤️ (@makeusdream_) March 8, 2015 A semi conscious Martin Skrtel would be better in defence than Glen Johnson — Michael Maloney (@_mjmaloney) March 8, 2015 Can should be back at CB and Glen Johnson should be back cleaning boots. #LFC — MerseysideFischer (@MerseysideFisch) March 8, 2015 Johnson makes me want to punch myself in the head several times over! #lfcvbrfc — LiverbirdLou (@RedLiverbirdLou) March 8, 2015 3. Brendan Rodgers still hasn’t won everyone over (Jon Super/AP) Rodgers did great things for Liverpool last season, and has turned things around in impressive fashion this time around. Nevertheless, he does make some baffling decisions sometimes… I still don't get Rodger's tactics. Sterling as wingback & tracking to own 18 probably isn't getting best of his abilities. #lfcvbrfc — Chris Jennings (@SeeJay07) March 8, 2015 4. Rudy Gestede has made it (Peter Byrne/PA) 16:32: "Rudy Gestede is unplayable". #LIVBLA — Michael Owen Quotes (@mickyowenquotes) March 8, 2015 If the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about, Blackburn striker Gestede has nothing to worry about. The commentators were not slow to voice their admiration for the Benin international – and that met with approval and disdain in equal measure from the massed ranks on Twitter. Gestede is basically the uninjured version of Andy Carroll — Ryan (@RBL96) March 8, 2015 Rudy Gestede unplayable in that first half — Joe Fallows (@JoeFallows) March 8, 2015 Rudy Gestede at half-time, three unsuccessful touches and a 52.6% passing accuracy. Hold-up play has been awful. #LFC — Jack Lusby (@jacklusby_) March 8, 2015 5. Sorry Michael Owen, you’re not there yet… We reckon Michael Owen’s getting better and better in his role as a co-commentator, but not that many people seem to agree with us. "I think he's bought that free kick", says Michael Owen, as we watch a replay of a defender clearly taking Sturridge down. — KICK HIS ASS SEABASS (@Brenzie) March 8, 2015 If I was stuck on a desert island with Michael Owen and a tin of beans I'd eat Michael and talk to the tin of beans! — dean rochford (@deanor1892) March 8, 2015 Michael Owen purchased his own personal CCTV camera and put it behind the bins at school to catch people smoking — campbell (@acampbell68) March 8, 2015 Michael Owen went up and introduced himself to substitute teachers before they took lessons in school — … (@MercyRuled) March 8, 2015 6. Everyone loves a goal And that’s one of the reasons why this match failed to capture the imagination… Erm…any chance of a goal? #lfcvbrfc — Football Tips (@footballtips) March 8, 2015 Skrtel didn't die for this — Steven Gerrard (@LFCChris_) March 8, 2015 7. People still believe in Mario Balotelli… (Peter Byrne/PA) After 58 minutes, Balotelli stepped off the bench. As the dirge of a match continued, people began to get a feeling… Imagine thinking Balotelli won't score an 82nd minute winner — #BanterJudge (@juanalbert098) March 8, 2015 This game has a late Balotelli winner written all over it. — TheODDSbible (@TheOddsBible) March 8, 2015 8. …but maybe they shouldn’t Balotelli shoots high and wide… and it's gone a bit higher still. Alan Green: It's exactly what you'd expect from Mario. #lfcvbrfc — BBC Radio 5 live (@bbc5live) March 8, 2015 9. Maybe replays aren’t such a good thing Great result for Blackburn, still fancy Liverpool in replay — Adam (@AdamFFC) March 8, 2015 Now we have to sit through the whole thing all over again. Oh lord…
