The blagger's guide to Wednesday's Premier League matches

With seven Premier League matches taking place on Wednesday’s night there was always going to be a barrage of talking points. At White Hart Lane, the initial concern was for Bafetimbi Gomis who collapsed as players made their was to to restart after Nacer Chadli gave Spurs an early lead. But Swansea were quick to explain the striker was fine and had not needed to be hospitalised. The collapse was due to an ongoing condition called vasovagal, said the club. That aside, here’s what else was going on. Results (Martin Rickett/PA) Liverpool 2 – 0 Burnley Manchester City 2 – 0 Leicester Newcastle 0 – 1 Manchester United QPR 1 – 2 Arsenal Stoke 2 – 0 Everton Tottenham 3 – 2 Swansea West Ham 0 – 1 Chelsea Most welcome return He’s back (Richard Sellers/PA) There were heart-warming scenes as Jonas Gutierrez joined the Newcastle team for the first time since October 2013 following his successful battle against testicular cancer. His substitute appearance prompted the biggest cheer of the night and a standing ovation at St James’ Park. Giroud’s goal was followed up by Sanchez ending a seven-game drought. Header of the day (Nick Potts/PA) Everton came unstuck against Stoke with the Potters’ scoring twice heaping further Premier League misery on the Toffees, now lying only six points above the drop zone in 14th place. It was Victor Moses who brought the game to life around the half-hour mark, cutting in from the left and firing a powerful strike goalwards that Tim Howard managed to parry away. Two minutes later, the on-loan Chelsea winger had his fourth goal of the season, finding the space in the Everton box to expertly guide a header past Howard from Phil Bardsley’s cross. Impressive stuff. Team of the day (Andrew Matthews/PA) Tottenham could have been out of sorts after losing the Capital One cup to London rivals Chelsea and exiting the Europa League in the past week. But they bounced back with a 3-2 victory over Swansea to keep their top-four finish on track to make this a huge win for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. White Hart Lane also deserves praise, all corners of the ground applauded Gomis as he left to be replaced by Nelson Oliveira, after his on pitch-collapse. Goal of the day (Richard Sellers/PA) Fourteen months after last finding the goal, Ashley Young netted to make the difference as Manchester United beat Newcastle. The late goal at Newcastle means Man U maintain their charge for a top-four finish. Young popped up in the 89th minute with his first goal since January 2014 to earn United a 1-0 victory over Newcastle. (Richard Sellers/PA) Most likely to impress the England boss (Tim Ireland/AP/PA) There’s only Roy Hodgson and he was watching the action as QPR took on Arsenal. Charlie Austin scored for QPR with a fine strike eight minutes from time but couldn’t find the equaliser. At the other end of the pitch on-form Rob Green did much to earn a potential England recall, despite the scoreline.
