What do Wigan fans think as 23-year-old David Sharpe takes over from chairman Dave Whelan?

So, farewell Dave Whelan and his dodgy leg. The 78-year-old, who never tired of telling people that he broke his leg in the 1960 FA Cup final, has stepped down as chairman of Wigan. Whelan did great things for the club, taking them from the Third Division to the Premier League after buying the club in 1995, though he’s become equally notorious of late for digging himself into massive holes while making ill-advised comments about racism. Dave Whelan resigns to spend more time with all his Jewish and Chinese friends — Ian Prior (@ianprior) March 3, 2015 Dave Whelan has resigned as Wigan Athletic chairman and has appointed Jim Davidson as his replacement. pic.twitter.com/jlbMqPs3zB — Nooruddean (@BeardedGenius) March 3, 2015 Whelan will be replaced as chairman of the club who are now in the Championship relegation zone by his 23-year-old grandson David Sharpe. The love Wigan fans have for Whelan is probably one of those things that’s difficult to understand unless you support the club. Love you uncle Dave 😘⚽️💙#wafc — romy stazicker (@Romystaz) March 3, 2015 This statu needs to be done #wafc pic.twitter.com/aSRNMV4VFk — martin clarke (@martinclarke84) March 3, 2015 The end of an absolutely magical 20 years. Thank you, Dave Whelan. #wafc pic.twitter.com/fBhRXTjtmW — Sam Whyte (@SamWhyte1) March 3, 2015 Thanks Mr Whelan, you took the club I love to heights I could only have ever dreamed of #wafc #ThanksDave — Jules (@LaticLaydee) March 3, 2015 One thing all football fans can relate to though – Whelan is a throwback to a bygone age, when a local businessman could take over a club and give them top-flight football (and let’s not forget an FA Cup final victory and European football, too). Absolutely gutting news and yet it was inevitable. I don't think anyone will achieve what Dave Whelan did ever again tbh. Hero. #wafc — Sean (@WafcSean) March 3, 2015 Not quite sure we'll see a club as small taken as far under one man again. It was one hell of a journey #wafc — Greg Farrimond (@GFarrimondWIG) March 3, 2015 For non-Wigan fans, there was a chance to make jokes about Whelan’s leg. I hope Dave Whelan stepped down on his good leg #WAFC — Big D (@vocnorth) March 3, 2015 Hope Dave Whelan doesn't break his leg as he jumps off the sinking ship. #wafc — Stephen Bailey (@S_BaileyITFC) March 3, 2015 Meanwhile, it would seem Wigan fans are concerned about the new man in charge. Sharpe, who has been a director of Wigan since December, used to run Sharpy’s fish and chip shop restaurant near the stadium, but it closed down a year ago after a reported plunge in trade. David 'the man who can't run a chippy' Sharpe has took over too. League 2 here we come 🎊🎉 #wafc — Sean (@WafcSean) March 3, 2015 Wow. I'm 23 and can't imagine being the chairman of my own house, never mind a football club. I could probably run a chippy, though. #wafc — Bob Allen (@TheRealBobAllen) March 3, 2015 Can you imagine him at Football League chairman's meetings? "who's getting the shots in lads?" #WAFC — John Cumberbatch (@johndanbatch) March 3, 2015 Not everyone was so pessimistic though. Massive challenge ahead for David Sharpe. Always said I wanted the club to remain in the Whelan family, rather than being sold on #wafc — Gemma Davies (@Gem_Davies) March 3, 2015 There'll be talk of Sharpe's age & his failed business, but we should back him. Whelan always said he'd never let 'a Venky's' happen at #wafc — Gemma Davies (@Gem_Davies) March 3, 2015 Whatever happens, it seems Wigan fans – whose side are nine points adrift of safety in the Championship – are in for an interesting time. A new era begins for Wigan Athletic #wafc — Greg Farrimond (@GFarrimondWIG) March 3, 2015 The club will either plummet down the leagues or Whelan's grandson will create a new legacy. Interesting time to support #wafc — Oi (@_yon_mon) March 3, 2015
