11 things we learned as Chelsea beat Tottenham to win the Capital One Cup

It promised a lot but in the end Chelsea shut Tottenham down to claim a 2-0 win in the Capital One Cup final. Here’s what we learned along the way. 1. Tottenham owned the arch (Paul Harding/EMPICS) It was a long-running contest on Twitter, to see whose fans could tweet the most to get the Wembley arch lit up their club’s colours. Tottenham won it – but that was as good as it got. 2. Racism is probably bad At Wembley. Warning for fans but why the ambiguity? Shouldn't racist chanting definitely lead to punishment? pic.twitter.com/tCeUC9QLfU — James Olley (@JamesOlley) March 1, 2015 3. A final’s not a final without a floating acrobat lady Because how else was the trophy going to arrive? (John Walton/PA) And to think they said flying giant ball acrobat women had gone out of the game for good — Barney Ronay (@barneyronay) March 1, 2015 4. There’s always a silver lining (Andrew Matthews/EMPICS) Yes, Christian Eriksen, your free-kick hit the bar when it would have given Tottenham an early lead if it had been a couple of inches lower… but look at it this way. Eriksen wins the #CrossbarChallenge. — KICKTV (@KICKTV) March 1, 2015 5. Jose Mourinho’s tactics don’t always work perfectly… To most people’s surprise, Mourinho chose to play Kurt Zouma in midfield. Zouma playing the role of Pepe when Jose was at Real Madrid. CB in midfield to disrupt the opposition. — Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) March 1, 2015 Zouma may well have been supposed to disrupt Tottenham’s midfield, but for most of the first half it wasn’t working. Spurs dominated the centre of the pitch and Zouma looked uncomfortable in the unfamiliar position. Zouma looking uncomfortable in the holding midfield role – passes the ball away quickly when he gets it, hesitant to aid the Chelsea attack. — Matthew Alrick Brown (@alrickbrown) March 1, 2015 6. …but it doesn’t matter WATCH: John Terry gives @ChelseaFC the lead. (John Walton/PA) Nobody expected Mourinho’s side to give up the lead after that. If John Terry has anything about him, he'd change into a suit to lift the Capital One Cup. — Paddy Power (@paddypower) March 1, 2015 But Tottenham have done more than their fair share of winning from losing positions this season, as Mourinho no doubt told his players at half-time. 7. Class is permanent WATCH: Diego Costa makes it 2-0 to @ChelseaFC. Live on SS1 now. Brought to you by @CapitalOneUK #CapitalOneCupfinal http://t.co/JzEgaz3Fqc — Sky Sports Football (@SkyFootball) March 1, 2015 That Cesc Fabregas-Diego Costa partnership which has gone conspicuously quiet of late linked up to get Chelsea’s second – well, sort of. Costa’s off-target shot in the 56th minute got a big deflection off Kyle Walker. Definite own goal from Kyle Walker, why should he get away with it in a cup final & I never?!!!! — Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) March 1, 2015 (Mike Egerton/EMPICS) Suddenly that Spurs comeback was looking very unlikely… 8. Even Harry Kane has off days At least he can make cool shapes out of water with his mouth (Mike Egerton/EMPICS) He’s been so reliable for so much of Tottenham’s season, but he was struggling to make an impact at Wembley. Harry Kane today. More walking cane than hurricane. Am I right, ladies and gentlemen? #CapitalOneCupFinal — Ian Hyland (@HylandIan) March 1, 2015 Loads of hype? Not turning up in the big games? On this evidence Harry Kane has everything it takes to play for England #CapitalOneCupFinal — Jason Bent (@Jason9Bent) March 1, 2015 9. Tottenham need more options Chasing the game, Spurs boss Mauicio Pachettino sent his best remaining attacking options into the fray – Roberto Soldado and Erik Lamela. Soldado or Lamela being sent on to save a cup final. Not sure I like those odds I'm afraid. — Nick Godwin (@NickGodwinsport) March 1, 2015 Can't win on tactics and heart alone. Players aren't good enough and the 56M spent on Lamela and Soldado doesn't help. Shows in big games — Habibullah Khan (@HuK_6) March 1, 2015 10. Chelsea win when it matters (John Walton/PA) Jose Mourinho's 21st career trophy. Winner. pic.twitter.com/nYrPzsPnsR — Rashad (@Mourinholic) March 1, 2015 11. Nobody will ever forget *that* John Terry moment At least the lame football accounts won't have to photoshop John Terry in a full kit lifting the trophy. A victory for Twitter. — death_stairs (@death_stairs) March 1, 2015 And now nobody’s going to forget this Nemanja Matic moment. Suspended Matic on Wembley pitch in his full kit. The influence of John Terry rubbing off on the whole squad — John Smith (@monkey_sponge) March 1, 2015 Matic is doing a John Terry!! — Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) March 1, 2015 You'd think Terry might have said to Matic 'It's really not worth it…" #fullkit — Matt Law (@Matt_Law_DT) March 1, 2015
