Reality was restored for outplayed Wigan Athletic as they were resoundingly brought back to earth following their first ever victory over Liverpool earlier in the week. Bolton Wanderers proved overwhelmingly superior at the Reebok Stadium where their most comprehensive league win of the season secured a third victory in the last four encounters to strengthen the home side's resolve in their fight to climb clear of the relegation positions.  Related ArticlesPremier League actionPremier League tableTelegraph player raterPremier League fixturesSport on televisionAn early goal from Johan Elmander with Kevin Davies doubling the advantage from the penalty spot shortly into the second half provided the foundation for Bolton's ultimate success as they convincingly bounced the back from a 4-0 mid-week trouncing of their own at Sunderland. Further goals from Fabrice Muamba and substitute Matt Taylor merely confirmed home superiority with Wigan left to fight their own battle for Premier League survival. Yet the game had started tamely with little to choose between two poor sides in a tedious first half highlighted only by Elmander's 10th-minute goal after Davies had exposed poor Wigan defending. A Davies shot over the bar in the 24th minute closely followed by a Chung-Yong Lee corner on the left that caused further consternation in the visiting defence were the only other worthwhile contributions as Bolton defended their lead. Wigan's response was two headers from Paul Sharner, both following crosses on the left by Victor Moses and then a Charles N'Zogbia attempt was driven straight at the home goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen. The second half was only two minutes old when Lee was fouled by Gary Caldwell and Davies despatched the penalty. And there was further anguish for Caldwell as Muamba turned him inside out before clinically delivering a 53rd-minute third. Shortly after replacing Jack Wilshire, Taylor was on the mark to further humiliate Wigan with a 69th-minute fourth.
