McCarthy vows to take relaxed approach

McCarthy cares passionately about Wolves - currently 17th in the table and only ahead of Burnley on goal difference - and is confident they will survive. But the former Republic Of Ireland boss believes he will be no good to anyone if he is uptight and agitated in the build-up to games.McCarthy said: "I've learnt getting wound up about it is counter-productive. If it affects me, it affects other people doing their jobs."You see me on the sidelines. I kick every single ball."I am involved in it on a Saturday but me getting agitated now, and upset with everybody, is not going to make a blind bit of difference to it."When I was younger, I was more agitated but I learnt a long time ago it does you no favours. It doesn't mean I don't care."Don't go away thinking I am not concerned about it. Every minute of the day I am thinking 'Can I do something different, better or change it?'"It is not an act. What you see is what you get."McCarthy concedes his belief in his squad to survive helps him to remain relatively relaxed as the season enters its final quarter. He said: "I have reason to be calm because we are playing well. If we had been playing badly and getting slapped, I might be different."But I am confident we will survive. I have never doubted or wavered on that at all."We are close to the bottom three courtesy of Burnley drawing with Stoke the other night. There's every chance we will get out of this position."I've a group of good young players who I know will scrap until the very end and keep going and they are actually playing very well."Despite the results, the performances have been terrific and I honestly believe, if we continue playing as well as we are, it has got to turn around."I'm not giving it the big bravado. I just think we will get more points than three other clubs."Wolves face a trio of successive away games against Burnley, Aston Villa and West Ham but McCarthy has faith in his side to perform to their best away from Molineux. He said: "I'm not going to try and play the Burnley game down. It is a huge game for both of us. Burnley have got a very good home record - 23 home points and one draw away at Manchester City."That tells you they are a good home side but I have seen us away and I think we've taken as many points away from home as any of the bottom ten sides."I tend to look at the opposition and they won't be looking at us and thinking 'This is a sure win' and neither will Villa or West Ham after this weekend."They will have seen us play away and know we are capable - and capable of having as many chances away as we have at home."
