O'Neill wants even more from Carew

The Villa boss has urged the Norway international to build on his FA Cup hat-trick at Reading last weekend and play a significant role during the remainder of the season.Carew has suffered a series of injury niggles this season but looked sharp against the Royals as Villa now gear up for a demanding schedule of matches. They will play five Premier League games in the next fortnight, starting with Saturday's clash at Stoke, as they play catch-up with their fixtures after Carling Cup and FA Cup success.Carew has not always endeared himself to O'Neill and was disciplined last season after being in a Birmingham nightclub in the early hours ahead of a European tie.But his contribution to Villa's revival under the former Celtic boss during the past three and a half years has been significant.O'Neill said: "Despite all the things that hover around, this has been John's best spell - and I think he would accept that."This boy has played in the Champions League final with Valencia, he's played for Lyon and other big teams."If John left Aston Villa tomorrow, you would say he has done very well for us."But he'll want to keep this going because no-one's leaving tomorrow. We've got a season to see through here and a very important season at that."O'Neill feels the time is right for Carew to make a significant contribution to Villa's push for a Champions League spot.He said: "It was great to see John get a bit of confidence from it all (at Reading). It's a big thing. Confidence and application are vital ingredients."At one stage or another someone takes up the mantle of carrying a team for a couple weeks."Some players do it individually. James Milner, Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor have all done it for us."Other players get carried at that time. Now it's payback time. Other people have to come in. You all have to come in (and perform) at one stage or another."No single person can win games single-handedly. They need help somewhere along the way. For us to continue on between now and the end of the season, we need everybody helping each other." Stoke v Aston Villa. Click here to bet.
