Nolan backs Toon star Gutierrez to make Argentina's World Cup squad

Jonas Gutierrez should be in Argentina's World Cup squad, according to his  Newcastle team-mate Kevin Nolan. Although it seems unthinkable that Diego Maradona would pick a second-division player for such a prestigious tournament, former Bolton midfielder Nolan thinks that Argentina should make an exception for Gutierrez. On a wing and prayer: Argentine ace Guitierrez has impressed for Newcastle in the ChampionshipMaradona has already claimed publicly that playing a full season in the Championship will not lead to Gutierrez jeopardising his international future if he keeps delivering impressive performances.Nolan feels that Gutierrez has silenced those who criticised the Argentine last season. 'I think a lot of it was unfortunate,' said Nolan, reflecting on the stick Gutierrez often took in the relegation campaign. 'He came in and I  thought he did alright. He wasn't the worstplayer but I thought he got pinned down for a lot of criticism whichwasn't deserved.  'Fair play to him. A lot of people thought he would be the first outand he  would throw the towel in but he has shown his qualities, andthis league is tough. 'You get some centre-halves who like to throw you about. He should be in Argentina's World Cup squad.'  Watford 1 Newcastle 2: Toon temper tantrum as Smith and Williamson clashHughton deserves a crack at Premier League, says Toon legend ShearerHarper enjoys life in the Championship as much as the Champions League  Explore more:People:Diego Maradona, Kevin Nolan, Jonas GutierrezPlaces:Newcastle, Argentina
