The former England football manager Terry Venables has been speaking recently about the Euro 96 football campaign and the effects it still has on him, eighteen years later. In an interview for Radio 5 Live, he spoke with presenter Nicky Campbell and owned up to the fact that there are nights when he still has nightmares about those days. Gazza’s near miss in that competition is something that still haunts him to this day. He believes that had Gascoigne scored, then England would have gone on to the final and possibly won it. Venables said “you wake up and think to yourself, what could it have been?” Whether this is true is mere speculation, but what does show itself to be true is that this, along with the 1990 World Cup, is the closest England has come to winning the title again. Let’s hope that Roy Hodgson does not suffer the same issues after the summer of 2014.
