Carlisle fears Pompey precedent

Pompey, who visit Turf Moor on Saturday, face a High Court date next Monday as they are fighting to prevent a winding-up order over unpaid debts.Burnley are a club often held up as a good example of financial management, and Carlisle believes the Premier League must be careful not to absolve big spenders of their responsibilities. The defender told BBC Radio 5 Live: "My personal opinion aside, I think the Premier League have got to be very, very wary in how they control this situation."The fear here is they set a precedent that will be followed by others who might use it to their own advantage."If they dip into their own coffers now or something of that ilk to save Portsmouth, then what's to stop other clubs who are in poor financial situations trying to bag off their debts onto the Premier League or into others' hands, when really it's a direct result of mismanagement?"Carlisle echoed Stoke boss Tony Pulis' call for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Portsmouth's travails. The 30-year-old said: "Nobody wants to see a football club go under. It ruins so many lives - not just the working lives of the people at the club, but also the thousands upon thousands of supporters who stuck with the club through thick and thin."But I agree with Tony Pulis, there needs to be a very deep investigation here to raise awareness of what went on and go down as a guideline for other clubs as something to be very careful of."
