Can Mata save Manchester United's season?

The biggest deal so far this window was completed on Saturday morning at the AON training complex. £37.1 million for Spaniard Juan Mata from Chelsea to Man Utd. But can the gifted playmaker be the saviour of United’s season? Mata is a wonderful talent; you only have to ask the Chelsea fans who adore him to know that. However, I feel he is an added luxury to a position that United suffer a surplus in. The number 10 role which Rooney flourishes in is also being hunted down by Januzaj and Kagawa would almost guarantee Mata is played out wide. United’s wingers have been far from impressive this season, so Juan on the outside would still be more than welcomed. Brilliant distribution and his creative spark puts him far ahead of Valencia, Nani and Young. Not being a traditional wide man, Mata would be much narrower than the previously mentioned players, nor does he provide the same defensive cover which arguably forced him out of the Chelsea team. A major signing can have an incredible impact on a team, just look at Arsenal and Ozil. The arrival of Mata will give United’s squad the lift they have desperately needed. However, the same problems still loom at Old Trafford. An obvious gap in the midfield and the issue of a deteriorating left back. It is in these areas Man Utd have lost games and Mata won’t change that. The whole in midfield left vacant by Roy Keane and Paul Scholes is a massive one to fill. One that Moyes has already failed once with in Fellaini. Doubts over whether David Moyes could lure the best players in the world to Manchester United have been answered but he can’t stop at Juan Mata. Persistent links with Vidal, Gundogan and Kroos now seem feasible when perhaps once they were just a pipe dream. It’s really down to Moyes to kick on in the transfer market and bring in one or two more world class signings to really salvage United’s season.
