Pardew Expects More From The Academy

Alan Pardew has brought in 22 players during his three years at Newcastle, and only ONE is British - Rob Elliot. But he insists the Magpies are committed to developing homegrown talent. The dwindling numbers of English starters in the Premier League was brought into sharp focus by new Football Association chairman Greg Dyke. And Pardew insists he is aware of the responsibility the club has to the national game, even though every single player ((apart from Blackpool winger Tom Ince) linked with Newcastle this coming transfer window is foreign.English trio Steve Harper, Danny Simpson and James Perch were allowed to leave this summer –  leaving a foreign-based squad.Alan Pardew: “We tried to bring an English player to this club for a lot of money in the summer, but it didn’t happen.“That’s something we’ve looked at. The ratio of foreign players is getting tight for us.“It’s important, in our transfer policy, that we bring in some English players.“Rest assured, as manager of the football team, I’m very focused on the Academy promoting talent from this area.“I’ve said to all our scouts that I want to bring in players from here. We’re scouring locally. That’s something we need to do. We need more coaching hours with our players.“But, in terms of transfers to our first team, you’ve got to be good enough to play for Newcastle. Unfortunately, the pool isn’t great.“We have Sammy. We have Dummett come through, who is definitely part of our first team squad.“We need more. There’s Arma and Campbell. We’re hoping for them. That’s that side of it covered.” IDEAL FOR CHRISTMAS MAGPIES IN EUROPE - HARVEY TO PARDEW The new version of "Magpies In Europe" is available NOW.
