Sturridge blow for Liverpool

Liverpool has been struck a massive blow with fears that joint top goal scorer Daniel Sturridge is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after he suffered suspected ankle ligament damage in training on Friday. Brendan Rodgers was left fuming after watching the 24-year-old striker play 90 minutes for England against Germany with an apparent thigh problem days before the derby, but this latest injury is much more serious, as Sturridge was spotted leaving Melwood Training Ground on crutches yesterday. The Liverpool striker was immediately taken for a scan on his ankle and, though the full extent of damage may not be apparent for a few days, it is not going to be good news. There will be growing concerns that Sturridge may be out for up to three months again after a recent lengthy spell out when he picked up a similar injury back in May v Ireland. Losing Sturridge for a lengthy period will be a huge setback for Rodgers in his bid to maintain Liverpool's impressive run of form and guide them back to European competition in the form of the Champions League. Apart from Luis Suarez, who is possibly the most in-form striker in the world lately, Liverpool are seriously lacking options up front. The £7.6m summer signing from Celta Vigo Iago Aspas is close to returning from a thigh injury but he has struggled to make any real impact so far. It looks like his opportunity may have just arrived on time for him though. Liverpool’s visit to Hull this Sunday is the first of seven fixtures in December; including difficult away games at Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Chelsea. Once 2014 arrives, it will be very interesting to see how Rodgers men have coped without Sturridge and if they really are going to challenge for top honors this season.
