Gibson woe for Republic and Everton

Everton midfielder Darron Gibson suffered suspected knee ligament damage during the first half of the Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan on Tuesday night. The 25-year-old, back in the international fold after ending his self-imposed exile in the wake of Giovanni Trapattoni's departure last month, was hurt after landing awkwardly as he made a 35th-minute challenge at the Aviva Stadium. He was treated on the pitch for several minutes with club manager Roberto Martinez watching from the stands, and was eventually carried off on a stretcher. An FAI statement issued via its Twitter account said: "Darron Gibson has been assessed by our team doc and will return to his club tomorrow for a scan with suspected knee ligament damage."Gibson, his club and Ireland will hope the damage is not serious with the player having only just recovered from injury.
