'Newcastle Was A Living Nightmare!'

Kevin Keegan has lifted the lid on his second spell as Newcastle United manager, describing it as a "living nightmare". The Chronicle reports today that Keegan revealed he regretted making a sensational return to Tyneside for a second coming as manager back in 2008. His tenure ended in controversy after constant rowing with transfer chief Dennis Wise resulted in him resigning before winning a subsequent court case following his dismissal. The confessions – made in a Sky Sports interview – evoked memories of the ill-feeling from his dramatic walkout as he claimed the club had been “dishonest” during transfer dealings five years ago. The Chronicle understands that the deals Keegan is referring to include a move for ex-Werder Bremen midfielder Torsten Frings, and then Real Zaragoza man Pablo Aimar. It is also believed that Keegan was keen on a young Gareth Bale, while Chelsea legend Frank Lampard – to whom he handed his England debut as Three Lions boss – was also on his wish-list. Instead, Keegan was handed Spanish flop Xisco and little-known South American Nacho Gonzalez as new players, while James Milner was sold to Aston Villa. Newcastle United have opted to keep their counsel following the claims made by Keegan. The Magpies see the Keegan era at United as a closed book and have opted against getting into a war of words. United are aware of the ex-captain and manager’s comments but are reluctant to go over what they see as old ground. Keegan revealed in the interview that he was excited by the prospect of taking on the St James’ post for a second time, but that it rapidly went downhill from the initial meeting to discuss the possibility of his return.
