HATCHET MAN: Relegate referee Riley after his Anfield nightmare
Mike Riley deserves to be dropped from the Premier League list for the foreseeable future after his woeful performance at Anfield on Sunday. This column is not usually an advocate of this sort of punishment for officials but the referee was so bad during Liverpool'swin over Chelsea it is hard to believe he has been taking charge of games in the Football League and higher for 15 years. Frank Lampard walked after this tackle on Xabi Alonso but Chelsea skipper John Terry had strong words for referee Mike Riley after the decision (below)Riley may have FIFA status but either his eyesight or his judgement was seriously impaired. Frank Lampard's sending-off was wrong and it is hard to see how the decision was arrived at. Jose Bosingwa's vicious kick in the back of Yossi Benayoun was blatant but ignored and Steven Gerrard escaped punishment for a tackle worse than the one Lampard walked for. None of these were difficult decisions but Riley got them all wrong and, with a lack of confidence in him from many managers after a history of mistakes, it is time for him to go.
