Shaun Maloney is delighted to have signed new deal at Wigan

Shaun Maloney has expressed his delight at having penned a contract extension at Wigan Athletic. The Scotland international has endured a tough time over recent years, with injuries having severely hindered his progress. He was unable to produce his best during a spell at Aston Villa as a result of too many spells on the sidelines, and saw a second stint at Celtic also ruined by regular setbacks. Wigan were prepared to take a gamble on his services in 2011 and have seen him flourish under Roberto Martinez - with a new two-and-a-half-year deal just reward for a man who has rediscovered his form and is finally showing the Premier League what he is capable of. On his decision to commit his future to the Latics, Maloney said: "Once I'd spoken to the manager, I was keen to put pen to paper and was happy the manager was so keen for me to stay. "I'd been plagued with injuries for a couple of years before I came to Wigan, but since I've been here, I've seen a different side of the game under the manager. "In terms of tactics and the work we do in training, I haven't really experienced anything like it."
