FA Cup Third Round: Barnsley v Burnley

Match Preview Team News: Craig Davies could be included in the squad, if his move to Bolton has not been completed by then. Caretaker manager David Flitcroft confirmed the threat of cup-tieing the club’s top scorer did not bother him. If Davies is not selected, it will leave The Reds very thin upfront. Marcus Tudgay has returned to Nottingham Forest after breaking his collarbone so Marlon Harewood would be in line to start after scoring only his second goal of the season at Peterborough on New Year’s Day from the bench. Teenager Reuben Noble-Lazarus could come into contention for only his fifth ever start. Jonathan Greening has also returned to Forest after the end of his loan spell whilst Bobby Hassell, Tomasz Cywka and Matty Done are all pushing for starts. The Reds are though in woeful form in front of their own supporters this season and have gone 11 home league games without victory- their joint longest winless home run. When it happened once before, back in the 1952-1953 season the run was punctured by an FA Cup home win over a team beginning with B, on that occasion it was Brighton. The Clarets have lost only one of their three most recent visits to Oakwell and claimed a 1-1 draw here back in November. The two sides have met once before in the FA Cup. Burnley won a Second Round tie 2-0 in 1911. The Reds won the competition the following year. Barnsley have though not won an FA Cup tie for five years, since that epic 1-0 victory over Chelsea that took them to the Semi-Finals in 2008 and last year’s 4-2 reverse against Swansea was the first time they had netted in the competition since that unforgettable night. Burnley have exited at this stage four times in the last seven years. Sean Dyche has never lost against Barnsley as a manager, winning one and drawing two. Dyche’s Burnley side have lost just one of their last five away games and claimed victory in South Yorkshire as recently as Tuesday when they defeated Sheffield Wednesday 2-0. They have managed to net 19 times on their travels this season- only three teams have managed more. Burnley do tend to concede in the FA Cup however and have managed just one clean in 15 matches in the competition. The Reds on the other hand have managed just ten goals at Oakwell this season, the lowest in the division. The Reds have also gone 15 matches since they last kept a clean sheet, their longest run for exactly 10 years when they went 22 matches without a shut out between 31st August 2002 and 18th January 2003. Barnsley come into this game on the back of three straight defeats and one win in 15. You only have to go back to November for the last time they lost four in a row.
