The tabloid's front page four days after the 1989 tragedy included
unsubstantiated police claims that Liverpool fans had urinating on rescue
workers and officers and pickpocketing victims.
The Sun's report caused widespread revulsion in the city and led to an
almost-total boycott of the paper on Merseyside that still exists to this
day. Unlike a number of other newspapers, which made clear that they were reporting
police claims about the fans' conduct, The Sun reported the claims as
established fact. In light of the damning report yesterday, the newspaper's editor at the time,
Kelvin MacKenzie, offered his profuse apologies for the story's headline,
The Truth, which he wrote.
