Naismith keen to keep Gers place

Boyd's absence has paved the way for Naismith to play in his preferred position up front, and he is keen to remain in the side and impress boss Walter Smith. But the forward is well aware the whole team will receive a major boost from the return of a player who had netted 19 goals before being forced to undergo hernia surgery last month."Hopefully I've shown the manager in the last couple of games that I can do a job up front," said Naismith."But Boydy scores goals for fun and you can't not wish for him to be back in the team."The season started pretty well for myself, I did well in pre-season and played in the majority of the games at the start of the season and in the Champions League."Then I got the niggly hamstring injuries over December but hopefully that's all cleared up and I can continue playing."This is probably the best chance I've had at Rangers to play through the middle and, when I get my chance, I've got to take it."Hopefully I'll get the chance to play a bit more and show the manager what I can do."Both Rangers and St Mirren came through their respective semi-finals midweek to book a place in next month's Co-operative Insurance Cup final. And, as far as Naismith is concerned, reaching their first major final in 23 years will make Saints an even more dangerous prospect as they attempt to take a step closer to another final tomorrow."I had the same feeling a few years back with Kilmarnock getting to a cup final and they will be full of confidence," he said."Although we won 2-0 in the last game, it was a very tough game and we know we will be in for another hard game tomorrow."Rangers' form in the domestic cups, as well as a 10-point lead at the summit of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League, means they are already being tipped for the treble this season. But Naismith cautioned: "We could get to the end of the season and not win any trophies."Everything is still up for grabs and we are not going to get complacent. Everybody is talking about a treble but there is a long way to go."As players we go into every game hoping to get a win and get as many medals as we can. Every player who plays football wants as many medals as possible and we are the same."We just go into every game confident that we are not going to be beaten and hopefully we get a win. We take it from there and I think we have shown that in the last couple of months."
