Di Matteo 'confused' by Town penalty

Albion dominated Tuesday's Championship clash before referee Attwell - who came to prominence with his award of the 'ghost goal' at Watford last season - gave Ipswich a 66th-minute penalty when Jonas Olsson headed a throw-in clear.Olsson was not leading with his arms but Attwell had seen an infringement of some kind and pointed to the spot to the bemusement of all inside Portman Road.Grant Leadbitter stepped up to score but Chris Brunt was able to poke home from two yards in stoppage time to earn Albion a 1-1 draw and a vital point in their promotion challenge.Di Matteo said: "Did anybody see a penalty there? I can't be the only one confused."There was nothing to see, it was an ordinary challenge. That was a key moment of the game because out of nothing Ipswich got a goal."We had some very good chances and should have gone ahead."When you are playing against the referee as well it is difficult but we kept going and credit to the players for finding an equaliser."We were the better team over the 90 minutes and the draw was the least we deserved."Our finishing was the only negative point. We played some very good football but we should be putting more chances away."Albion striker Roman Bednar had a host of chances in an open first half, while Brunt was denied by a fine goal-line clearance from Ipswich defender Gareth McAuley. But Roy Keane's Ipswich side also had their moments and the former Manchester United midfielder unsurprisingly disagreed with Di Matteo's complaints. He said: "I don't think he [Di Matteo] should be flummoxed."The boy Olsson had barged someone at Newcastle the other week and I believe he had been warned earlier on in the game but some people don't listen to warnings."The media has been full of warnings about shirt-pulling and what you can get away with so he should know better."But I'm delighted."We came up against a very good team who caused us all kinds of problems and we applied ourselves well."We could have finished the game off at 1-0 but I do not begrudge West Brom the draw."I am happy tonight. I may not look it - but I am."Centre-halves McAuley and Damien Delaney were both in fine form as Town weathered a second-half storm and Keane paid tribute to his improving side. After a dreadful start to life in Suffolk Keane has now seen his side lose just once in the last 15 league games and he believes they are on the up.He said: "When I was driving to the game I knew that we would have to defend well if we were going to have a chance and they did that."A blind man could see that West Brom have a very good chance of winning promotion."They play very good football and move the ball well and we knew that but in terms of clear-cut chances we had the better ones."We are nearly a good team but we all know nearly never made it."Are we short in certain areas? You bet we are. But we are improving all the time and they gave it their all tonight."
