McCarthy wants to up goal output

Wolves tackle revitalised Liverpool at Molineux on Wednesday having netted just 17 times in 21 league games - and four of those have come from veteran central defender Jody Craddock.Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, a deadly predator in the Championship with 25 goals last season, has a single penalty against Aston Villa in October to his name in the top flight.McCarthy said: "We have basically played alright but we have not won games. We want to get points. We have been on the 19 mark for too long."Why have we such a poor goal record? We've been working at it since the day we walked back in here for pre-season training on July 1, whether through signing players or in training and how to get goals - and nothing has changed."Keepers have made some great saves, we have missed chances, we have created some but we have stepped up a level and it is not as easy."We've found it harder to score from every aspect but we've had chances. It is harder to score in the Premier League. How many players got 10 goals at this level last season? Not many."It is about taking the percentage of chances. It is not like last year in the Championship when we created loads and loads. There are not that many chances so, when they come along, it's about taking them."Jody Craddock has scored four or five. We need someone else to chip in as well."McCarthy believes it would be foolish to write off Liverpool's top-four chances despite the recent injuries to key duo Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard who may return tonight after a hamstring problem. He said: "When Liverpool have no Gerrard and Torres they play exactly the same way but not quite as well as if Gerrard and Torres were playing."But I watched them against Spurs last week and they performed very well. It was a good professional performance."The team they put out that night was very solid and Dirk Kuyt, who got their two goals, was outstanding."To suggest that when Gerrard and Torres don't play means they are any less than a top-four team would be barmy."Let's not underestimate them just because they have been missing those players."
