Gills and U's play out stalemate

Gillingham, still looking for their first win of 2010, handed debuts to new signings Rene Howe, Tristan Plummer and Darren Dennehy and started brightest against a Colchester team that had conceded 12 goals in their last two games.Top scorer Simeon Jackson went closest for the home team in the fourth minute with the Canadian international's lobbed effort going just wide of the right post. After 10 minutes Colchester's Kayode Odejayi just failed to turn in a low cross from right-back Christian Ribeiro before Gills keeper Alan Julian did enough to keep out John-Joe O'Toole's 30-yard snap shot.Substitute Luke Rooney almost broke the deadlock for Gillingham after 64 minutes when being played in by Jackson but his drilled left-footed shot was blocked by keeper Ben Williams.Instead it was striker Lisbie who almost stole the game with the last chance of the game but he headed Ribeiro's cross against the bar.
