Sunderland admit interest in Paraguay striker Salvador Cabanas

The Stadium of Light club are poised to make a bid for the 29 year-old who plies his trade in Mexico with Club America but Bruce is convinced Sunderland will face plenty of competition for his signature. "I've monitored Cabanas," Bruce said. "He's a fantastic player and whether a deal is possible for him, I don't know.  Related ArticlesBruce: rivals cannot afford Kenwyne JonesTransfer TalkBirmingham and Forest records on the lineBruce: we have not bid for KirklandKenwyne Jones 'not for sale'Sunderland defend postponement"He's somebody who would be of interest to us but I'm sure if he became available, there would be a lot more clubs interested too." The 5ft 7in Cabanas, who has been likened to Manchester City's Argentine forward Carlos Tevez due to his stocky stature, has considerable pedigree and was named South American Player of the Year for 2007. He has scored 64 goals in 113 games for Club America and ten goals in 44 appearances for his country who have qualified for next summer's World Cup finals in South Africa where they will face Italy, New Zealand and Slovakia. Bruce is now focusing on Cabanas, whose international team-mate Paulo Da Silva joined Sunderland last summer, with Germany striker Kevin Kuranyi deciding that he wants to remain in his homeland with Schalke. Sunderland, who are still chasing Wigan left-back Maynor Figueroa, will also step up their pursuit of Hamburg's Ivory Coast international right-back Guy Demel. Demel, had a spell on Arsenal's books as a teenager, will be out of contract at the Bundesliga club at the end of this season and Sunderland are convinced they can bring him back to England.
