Cherries: Brett nominated for Channel Islands award

Cherries striker Brett Pitman has capped a memorable 12 months by being nominated for the Channel Islands sports personality of the year award. Pitman has been short-listed with fellow Jerseyman Matt Banahan, an England rugby international, and Guernsey trio Heather Watson, Alison Merrien and Jeremy Frith. Watson won the US Junior Tennis Open, Merrien is a top international bowler, while Frith plays in the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League. Pitman's exploits for Cherries during the past 12 months have helped put Jersey on the map. The 21-year-old regularly hit the headlines after netting 27 goals during the calendar year. He has plundered more than 100 goals at three different levels for Cherries since crossing the Channel to join the club's youth ranks seven years ago. Pitman told the Daily Echo: I'm delighted to have been nominated and it came out of the blue. It's quite flattering that people on Jersey take an interest in how I'm doing at Bournemouth. Although the Channel Islands are fairly small, people are keen, passionate and very knowledgeable about their respective sports. I certainly wouldn't have been given my chance in the pro game without the help of a lot of people back home and will always be grateful for their support. To vote for Pitman, call 0845 606 2404 (calls charged at local rates, mobiles vary but may cost considerably more), or text Brett to 07797 788 888 (normal text rates apply) or vote online at www.channelonline.tv/channelonline/ (web votes are free and are limited to one vote per user). ¢ Cherries' League Two clash at Rotherham, postponed on January 9, has been rearranged for Tuesday, February 2 (7.45pm).
