McCarthy: Rotation's all in the game

The former Republic of Ireland coach came under fire when he rotated all 10 outfield players for the 3-0 Premier League defeat at Manchester United last month. He made half a dozen changes for Sunday night's 1-0 FA Cup victory at Tranmere but feels he is not being treated the same as his Premier League counterparts, with United and Arsenal both sending out under-strength teams - with differing outcomes - in the third round."Was it six [changes]? Is everyone counting now?" said McCarthy."Everyone makes a lot of my team selection but I pick a team to win the games."If we have got a game Saturday, Tuesday in a cup replay and a big game the following Saturday, I might change my view on that."I might think about the [league] game like all these big-name managers do who never seem to be disrespecting any competition - only me. what a load of tosh that is eh?"Wolves' match-winner at Prenton Park, Matt Jarvis, is hopeful the hard-fought victory over League One Tranmere will help boost league performances. The midfielder scored the only goal 13 minutes from time - having missed a sitter from seven yards in the first half - to avoid an upset. And after back-to-back league defeats, part of a run of six losses in their last nine matches, Jarvis insists they have to take as many positives as possible out of the Tranmere result."It's never nice losing two on the spin but it's a real morale booster to get a win," he said."Any win is great for confidence and we need that to go into the next game against West Ham (on Sunday)."We feel we've been putting in really good performances without getting the right results."But last night we did and it's put us in a good frame of mind for the next game."Jarvis scored for the first time since mid-April and he admitted it is an area of his game he has to improve on to help the fight against top-flight relegation."That is what I need to start doing and that's what I've been practising so I'm glad it paid off," the 23-year-old told the Birmingham Mail."I need to score more so picking one up last night will hopefully see me kick on."Despite their cup exit, Tranmere manager Les Parry hopes his side can now focus on survival with the club precariously placed third-bottom of League One."We will probably dwell on this today but we need to concentrate on Gillingham (on Saturday) as our away form isn't fantastic and we need to address that," he said."That performance against Wolves was not from a team third from bottom of League One but we are third from bottom so we have got to get our fingers out, get some points and get up the league."
