Dons boss apologises to Hegarty

McGhee made the comment after his side's Scottish Premier League win at Tannadice on Saturday.Dons defender Davide Grassi was sent off during the match, after which McGhee accused United's players of taunting the Italian by saying they would "smash his face in".The former Pittodrie striker added: "I used to come here and have Paul Hegarty tell me he'd break my leg."But you don't react. You just bide your time then smash their face in!"Hegarty was incensed at the remark, telling BBC Scotland: "I am absolutely raging. His comments are disgraceful."I don't know where he gets that from. I never said anything like that in my life."My track record speaks for itself, I was only sent off once in my career. I'll be speaking to him in the next day or two."He's talking 30 years ago, I never ever did anything like that. Maybe he's losing his marbles. It's sad that a manager of his standing has stooped to this."McGhee said: "I apologise if I caused offence to Paul."He was one of the United players I played against regularly and was the first name that came into my head."I accept he never said anything like that to me when we were playing."It was a tongue-in-cheek remark, a throwaway line. I never meant to cause him any offence and I apologise to him if I have offended him."Hegarty won eight caps for Scotland in a 20-year playing career and was working as an assistant to former national team boss George Burley before the latter's sacking in November.
