Raith boss quiet on United link

It has been claimed Raith boss McGlynn is now one of the front-runners for the position but he would not discuss the matter when contacted.United have been forced to look for alternatives after caretaker manager Houston chose not to apply for the role vacated by new Scotland boss Craig Levein last week.Former Tannadice star Michael O'Neill, currently in charge at Shamrock Rovers, is said to be another leading candidate.Houston decided he wanted to resume his role as first-team coach less than 24 hours after Wednesday night's 7-1 Scottish Premier League thrashing at Rangers. He has refused to lay into his players following the result, insisting they already know how much they let themselves down.Houston will take charge for Saturday's match against Aberdeen before taking a step back, and he is confident his players will end his tenure on a high.He said: "Our players have personal pride and they have done well this season."So I'm not going to stand and slate them for what happened on Wednesday."We made a lot of individual errors and they know that."It's done now and the important thing is how they respond to it."What we can't forget is that we're fourth in the league and are only four points behind Hibs."We can still catch them, no doubt about that, but we need to string some results together."The confidence has dipped a bit and performances have not been great lately."That has been since before I took over as interim manager as well."We need to pick ourselves up, roll the sleeves up and get on with it."Houston has worked at United for three years and is hoping to stay on in some capacity, although much will depend on who the new man is.The 52-year-old former Falkirk player believes whoever comes into the hotseat will inherit a club still capable of going places. He said: "There's not a lot wrong with this club; we've got a good, honest squad of players."We've not played to our capabilities lately and maybe on Wednesday the uncertainty had an impact on them a bit."They allowed their heads to go down, which isn't like them."But the main thing is they have a great chance to bounce back from that against Aberdeen."It won't be easy because they have been going along well and they are always close games."But it's a derby match, there will be a big crowd at it and I know the boys are determined to make up for what happened at Ibrox."United will welcome back Andy Webster but Scott Robertson remains sidelined along with Lee Wilkie and Francisco Sandaza.
