Holidays on hold as Henderson catches Capello’s eye
BLACK CATS starlet Jordan Henderson has revealed he has put his summer holidays on hold after being told England boss Fabio Capello is keeping tabs on his progress. The midfield playmaker is one of several Sunderland successes this season and it comes as no surprise Capello has made aenquiries after some sparkling performances. The modest Henderson admitted that while he is flattered to have caught the attention of the national coach he does not envisage a World Cup call up this summer. A few people have told me the England coach has been asking about me, but I am not taking that on board too much at the moment, said the 19-year-old, who has netted twice in 20 appearances this term. I just want to play for this club and give everything I have got, and whatever comes extra is brilliant. But it gives me great confidence to know I have caught his eye. I don't really know what Capello has said but a couple of people have told me that. (Darren) Benty told me he asked what my height was, but I can't get carried away. My friends won't let me get carried away. I have just got to keep doing the things I have been doing. I don't see why I have to change my character and I will stay just the same person. I have got high standards at the moment and I want to go even higher. Cancelling his holidays is nothing new to the Black Cats' highly-rated midfield star. Henderson also put last summer's break on hold in a bid to secure a first team place at the Stadium of Light; a decision which has clearly reaped the benefits. In the summer I didn't take much of a break and kept working really hard, said Henderson. I was doing lots of running and weights to make sure I would be right when we came back. I was ready to go and preseason I got the chance and I took it. I have not looked back and once I was given the opportunity I just wanted to show what I could do. I spent last season out on loan but I didn't want to do that again so I have given everything I can this season. Henderson's form dipped slightly from the high standards he had previously set when he first burst into the team and there have been calls for him to be rested. But the England Under-19 international believes he does not need a spell on the sidelines to recharge his batteries. The gaffer has shown good confidence in me and I certainly don't need a rest, insisted Henderson. I don't feel tired. I just want to keep playing. The confidence is still there and everyone is pulling together. There is a great team spirit and the gaffer is still right behind us. Hopefully the results will come, starting at Blackburn. We have had a few injuries, but we can't make excuses. We have just got to go out there at Blackburn give everything we've got. We have got good enough players here to go out and win games.
