Taking the Mick: McCarthy defends changes after Man United crush Wolves

Backlash: Fans turned on McCarthy because of his team selectionWolves fans turned on manager Mick McCarthy after he fielded a reserve side in last night's 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford. And their anger is likely to be matched by Premier League managers who saw Manchester United pick up three easy points to go level with leaders Chelsea.McCarthy changed every outfield player from the side that won at Tottenham on Saturday. Fans chanted 'What a waste of money', 'Where is our first team?' and 'Forty quid to watch the reserves' as Wolves were swept aside. But McCarthy said he was more concerned with Sunday's clash against Burnley and, given the injuries in his squad, had no choice. He said: 'I played the best team available to me tonight; the fittest, best and strongest team I could pick, that hadn't played on Saturday. That was my best team available because they were all fresh legs. I can understand the fans but that IS my first team.'I hope they understand that because my decisions will be judged on whether we stay in the Premier League.'I'm not bothered about the reaction from anybody else. I make decisions for the good of my players and the good of the club.'Premier League regulations require teams to field their strongest possible side but McCarthy expects no punishment. He added: 'I knew those questions would be asked of my decisions but what I haven't got tonight is any more injuries.' Calf strain: Vidic picked up an injury on a night when he scoredSir Alex Ferguson had few complaints about McCarthy's selection. He said: 'Wolves put up a good show considering it was mostly their second string. It wasn't surprising, given that they have Burnley on Sunday.'The only downside for United was a calf strain picked up by Nemanja Vidic, who joins a list of eight injured defenders. Ferguson said: 'Wes Brown has a hamstring and Vidic has a calf strain, so he's a worry for Saturday. But we just have to get on with it.' Manchester United 3 Wolverhampton Wanderers 0: Much-changed Wolves are like lambs to the slaughter at Old TraffordFab concern over Owen: Ferguson should use United striker more oftenInjured Wolves midfielder Edwards faces 10 weeks on the sidelinesALL THE WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS FC
