Portsmouth move for AC Milan's Emerson

The 32-year-old did not feature in Milan's squad that travelled to Bologna at the weekend, opening the way for a move before the end of the month.A calm, steady presence in any midfield in which he has played, Emerson has championship medals from both Italy and Spain and is a former captain of Brazil. The player's agent Vincenzo Morabito confirmed that Emerson would be interested in a move to England, possibly for his final contract in the game.'We are negotiating on behalf of Portsmouth, and Milan are ready to sell,' said Morabito.'We must consider that the player's contract will run out next June.'It remains to be seen what his decision will be. A one-and-a-half year contract would probably satisfy him.'Emerson's age and the fact that Milan are blessed with a huge number of midfield players would put Portsmouth in a strong position to pay only a nominal fee for his services, provided the player can be convinced of the merits of a move.Portsmouth's excellent showing against Milan in the Uefa Cup at Fratton Park, in which Emerson featured, is believed to have impressed the Brazilian.Emerson's current team-mates beat Bologna 4-1 in his absence, with Kaka scoring twice in his first game since turning down the chance to move to Manchester City.David Beckham also scored in the game, his first for the club with whom he is on-loan from LA Galaxy.
