Mikel, 21, was pulled over by officers while driving his Range Rover near the club's Stamford Bridge stadium in west London at 5.30am on Saturday morning. The £40,000-a-week midfielder, who lives in Surrey, was given a breath test and put in a police cell. He had been charged and bailed by the time Chelsea beat Ipswich 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. Nigerian international Mikel was serving a one match suspension for accruing five yellow cards, so was not available to play in the match. He faces a minimum of a year's driving ban and a maximum of six months in jail with a £5,000 fine if convicted. He is due to appear in court in April. A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "John Obi Mikel, 21, from Weybridge, will appear on bail at West London Magistrates Court on April 3 charged with driving a motor vehicle whilst over the limit." A spokesman for Chelsea FC said: "We are aware he was arrested and charged. We want to establish the facts before we comment."
