Birthday bonus for Cherries' Pearce

The Bournemouth defender has also broken the stranglehold that strikers have held over the award this season. His Bournemouth team-mate Brett Pitman won the award in August/September, and Crewe's goal machine Calvin Zola was the recipient in October, but now it is the turn of the defenders to receive recognition.Pearce celebrates his birthday on 6th December and will be happy that the Cherries have started the season with a bang and currently lie in second place in the table.Their success has been built on a strong defence, with the former Portsmouth stopper a rock at the heart of their backline. And it is not just current boss Eddie Howe who is raving about Pearce as Howe's predecessor, Jimmy Quinn, had spotted his potential last season. He told the Bournemouth Echo: "He's made of steel."I've been delighted with Jason. You look within your squad to see which players have got grit, determination and a bit of character - and he fits the bill on all counts for me. He's certainly a player I think can play a lot higher."He's enjoying his football; he's a nice lad and has always got a smile on his face. He's playing with a lot of composure now and I'm delighted to have him. From what I've seen I think he's one of the better defenders at this level."There was summer interest from Plymouth for the talented defender, but he was quick to pledge his future to the Cherries. He has come a long way since he was sent out on loan to Woking whilst a young defender learning his trade at Portsmouth and is now an integral part of Howe's plans. If Bournemouth are to achieve promotion this season then no doubt Pearce's defensive attributes, allied to Pitman's goals, will be critical.
