Tottenham target £20m Roque Santa Cruz

According to this morning's Daily MirrorSpurs manager Harry Redknapp has been given the green light to make the huge bid for Santa Cruz, who was widely expected to join Manchester City this month. Sam Allardyce, the Blackburn manager, has been unwilling to let Santa Cruz leave Ewood Park without lining up a replacement. But Redknapp has a number of players – Darren Bent and Jermaine Jenas among them – that he is prepared to let go, making a cash-plus-player deal for Santa Cruz a possibility. Speaking after the 3-1 victory over Stoke at White Hart Lane which lifted Spurs away from the relegation places, Redknapp said he was trying to bring one more major signing before Monday. Brazilian striker Fred was among those linked with Spurs. Redknapp had claimed the Lyon forward failed to show up to a meeting in London, but his camp have now angrily denied those claims, branding Redknapp a 'liar'. Fred's agent and brother Rodrigo said: "What Redknapp said is a lie, Fred never said he would come to a meeting. "Redknapp said he would come to see us in France on Sunday but he did not come. 'Then everything changed, they suddenly wanted us to come to London on Monday. But here they would pressure him. "He wanted to come to Tottenham but they let us down so he will not be joining them. It's as simple as that."
