Friedel thriving on Villa competition

Friedel has been in superb form all season and produced another magnificent performance in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Tottenham. However, the 38-year-old American is not taking his place in the side for granted as he knows there is a younger rival champing at the bit.Friedel's compatriot Guzan has excelled when given the opportunity, saving four penalties in the Carling Cup victory over Sunderland in October. He is expected to start Tuesday's quarter-final at Portsmouth and Friedel is glad to have some competition for the number one spot."I have always been lucky that I have had self-motivation," he said in The Sun."There were years when we didn't have strength in depth in the goalkeeping position at Blackburn, so you had to spur yourself on."But Brad Guzan has an incredible work ethic and I know he is very, very good."Maybe in the back of my mind that keeps me going. It is paramount in the Premier League you have at least two good goalkeepers." Portsmouth v Aston Villa. Click here to bet.
