We can bounce back

STEVE Staunton believes his embattled Darlington players possess enough character to bounce back tonight from Saturday's heavy defeat. Quakers lost 5-2 at Chesterfield though Staunton took plenty of positives from Darlington's performance. He says his team can recover this evening at home to Morecambe as Darlington bid to make it three wins from three on home soil under Staunton. Quakers have won both matches at The Northern Echo Arena since Staunton was appointed in October and a victory this evening is much-needed. It is important we don't let Saturday's result knock confidence, said Staunton. On paper it looked poor and we were disappointed but there were good things on show and that gives us plenty to build on for the Morecambe game. Since myself and Kevin came here I haven't been able to knock the effort of the players, they keep going until the end. I think we have the character in the team to bounce back and show the home supporters what we're capable of. Our results at home have been decent in the last couple of games and Tuesday gives us a great chance to continue that. Midfielder Jonathan Hogg impressed in a goalscoring debut at Chesterfield so will keep his place tonight assuming he recovers from a slight back injury. On Saturday, Staunton was pleased with the 20-year-old who became the 36th different player to appear for Quakers this season after joining on loan from Aston Villa. Staunton said: I thought he coped well. He's one of those players who gets about the pitch, makes tackles and scores goals. He does the nitty gritty stuff very well and we need someone like that in this division. Although Staunton's team is unlikely to feature wholesale changes, he is likely to revert to 4-4-2 while striker James Collins will expect a recall. Striker Mor Diop hopes to recover from the calf injury that ruled him out at Chesterfield. Morecambe have moved up to mid-table with three consecutive wins that have coincided with the return to the club of former Quakers winger Neil Wainwright. During September he was sent on loan to Barrow but he is now back in Morecambe's plans and is likely to be on the bench tonight. Grimsby, one place above Qukaers, yesterday appointed former youth-team coach Neil Woods as their new manager. Darlington: Liversedge, Barnes, Miller, Foster, Giddings, Mulligan, Hogg, G Smith, Davis, Thomas, Collins.
