Bobby Moore and Pele swop shirts after the gameNow 17 years retired, Varley was 35 at the World Cup in Mexico but he almost didn't make it there after his car broke down during the Daily Mirror pre-World Cup rally in South America. Stranded far from the finals, he had to hitch-hike his way to the opening game. But once he was there, his eye for a picture gave him the perfect image. At the final whistle, John loitered around Bobby Moore, hoping that Pele would approach after their brilliant duel. Of course, he did and John captured the now world-famous image while other photographers were looking on in awe. Such was its impact that the great Brazilian signed one for him some years later. England v Brazil: Hail the great class of 1970 - Moore, Pele, Banks, Charlton, Jairzinho.
