McDonald in a confident mood

Now the midfielder is aiming to help the Scotland Under-21s take another step towards qualification for the UEFA Under-21 Championship when they travel to Azerbaijan for this weekend's clash. As far as McDonald is concerned, his confidence could not be any higher ahead of the trip following his efforts at the City of Manchester Stadium. It proved to be a good day for the Scots, with senior internationals Graham Alexander and Steven Fletcher also on the scoresheet. But it was McDonald who had the final say with the leveller just three minutes from time."It was brilliant for me to get the goal and great for the team to get a draw," he said."No-one expected us to go there and get anything. So to get a draw and to get a goal for myself was an added bonus."Chris Mitchell tried to get the goal up on YouTube but it wasn't there. The boys have been joking about it but I'm not too bothered what they think!"It was a great occasion for me scoring my first Premiership goal and it was my birthday that week as well so it was just a great week for me."It has given me a boost. But it's the same as any other time you come away with Scotland - we just have to work hard as a team and try to get a result and hopefully we can do that."The young Scots head into Saturday's game sitting joint top of the table with Austria and Belarus, but McDonald admits they should have their noses in front. He said: "We've had nine points out of 12 and to be fair we should have won the game against Austria away as well, it should have been 12 out of 12."I don't know anything about Azerbaijan at all. But the boys in the team know that we can go across there and win."People are saying we should win the game but we will have a look at the video clips and just go over there and work hard."Meanwhile, boss Billy Stark believes the Under-21s are beginning to reap the benefits of McDonald's growing confidence in the Premier League. He said: "That's something that you can never really plan for, a player coming to join us on the Monday having scored his first goal in the Premiership on the Saturday. It was obviously a great lift for him."Kevin did very well for us in Austria and I thought that was his best game for us. Against Belarus at St Mirren he also played well and worked very hard for us."So maybe he is starting to really come to terms with things down there as well and that's helping him every week. We look on him as a key player for us."
