A brand new golf tournament, 'Golf Champions of Football', has been
launched for football fans who are as passionate about golf as they are
about the wonderful game and will take place at the Vila Sol Vilamoura
Spa & Golf Resort in Portugal in May and June 2010.
Hosted by DK Events LDA, this innovative event will give golfing
football fans in the UK the chance to win this brand new competition in
their club colours and extend their support for their chosen team on
the fairways and greens of the Algarve in late Spring.
Supporters will have to be quick to dust off their woods and polish up
their irons however as the tournament only allows one fourball per
professional football club and securing each team's slot comes on a
first-come, first-served basis.
"The Golf Champions of Football is a wonderful way of bringing together
people with the dual passions of two great sports, golf and football;
people who are ardent fans of their football team of choice and who
also enjoy playing golf at a competitive, yet friendly level with
fellow footie fans," says Darryl Kenyon of DK Events.
"It is also a great opportunity for football supporters to show off
their skills on the golf course, wear their football teams' colours
with pride and pit themselves against rival clubs in a relaxed, yet
challenging competition."
The Vila Sol Golf Course should prove a demanding test for all the
participants. It was voted in the Top 100 Courses in Europe by Golf
World Magazine, has twice hosted the Portuguese Open and is home to the
late Sir Bobby Robson's Annual Charity Event.
Already four big names from the world of football have signed up for
the Golf Champions of Football 2010, namely Cardiff City Manager, Dave
Jones; former Aston Villa player Neil Cox; Darren Purse, currently
signed to Sheffield Wednesday, and Sky TV football pundit, Don Goodman.
"This is a superb concept and I am extremely excited to be taking part
in what promises to be an outstanding tournament," comments Dave Jones.
"It's a great opportunity for supporters to represent their club out on
the golf course in a competitive format and I am quite sure that there
will be a lot of banter and ribbing amongst the competitors, not just
about their golf but about their rival football clubs."
Keen golfer Neil Cox, who lives in the Algarve, says, "I am looking
forward to being part of this event and mixing the two big loves in my
life; golf and football."
"It's always a memorable occasion when football supporters get together
and do 'friendly' battle.bring it on!" adds Don Goodman.
To play in the Golf Champions of Football, golfers will have to pay
£650 per person, £1,250 per two-ball and £2,400 per four-ball, a price
that includes all golf, three nights of five-star accommodation, Faro
airport transfers and a Gala Evening.
Each team of four will be entered to play in one of three group stages
to play alongside fellow supporters from around the country.
Winning teams from each stage are awarded prizes with the team with
overall points lead will be crowned the inaugural 'Golf Champions of
Football'.
