Tributes to former Liverpool FC star Ray Lambert

FORMER Liverpool FC full back Ray Lambert has died at the age of 87.Mr Lambert joined the club as a schoolboy in 1936, aged 13, and signed as a professional footballer with the club on his 17th birthday.His footballing career was brought to a halt the same year with the outbreak of WWII during which he played football for the army.Following the war he played 341 games for Liverpool as a defender alongside Bob Paisley and Billy Liddell including their title-winning 1946/47 season and scored two career goals, which were both penalties.He played in the FA Cup final of 1950 when Liverpool lost 2-0 to Arsenal before hanging up his boots in 1956. Mr Lambert also represented Wales five times between 1947 and 1949.After retiring from football he became a newsagent in Wavertree.His son Adrian said: 'He thoroughly enjoyed his football at Liverpool - he used to get the bus from Flint with an Evertonian for training sessions.'He had offers from the likes of Chester near the end of his career, but he wanted to finish at a big club.
